Checking a gecko's calcium stores on a regular basis can be very beneficial to the over all health of your gecko. Proper calcium supplementation can prevent metabolic bone disease, be beneficial to breeding and egg production and increase the chance of your gecko having a long healthy life.

To check the calcium stores located in the back of your gecko's throat you can coax it's mouth open by pressing on the sides of the crested gecko's jaw covering the holes on the sides of it's head. With a little bit of coaxing your crested gecko should open it's mouth wide revealing it's calcium sacks. If the calcium sacks are round and white your gecko is in good health and you're doing well with supplementation. If they are gray or black your gecko could use added calcium to it's diet.

Don't worry if a male crested gecko has significantly smaller calcium stores than a female yet is eating the same diet, male crested gecko's don't need to store or absorb as much calcium as a female to be healthy as much of the calcium females absorb goes towards egg production whether the eggs are fertile or not.

I forgot to mention in that section that the majority of geckos do not enjoy having their calcium checked and will make a point of bite and/or poop on you while you attempt >.<

Being bitten by a crestie is terrifying only because I'm scared they'll break their jaw in the process!
