BORNEO SHORT TAILED PYTHON
NATURAL HISTORY
-Borneo Short Tailed Pythons are native to the island of Borneo in Indonesia.
-This python is usually found in wet swampy areas.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
-Borneo's are Short Heavy Bodied Snake with a wide varity of Patterns and color muttations.
-Normal Borneo's are a chocolate brown to a caramel color with lighter tan or cream-colored markings. Some Borneo's have Partial Dorsal striping while others do not.Belly scales are a off white and get orangish before sheds.
-Some color mutations include the marbled ,Ghost,Leopard,Full striped, super striped and striped Ghost Borneo.
-Females can range from 4ft to 6ft in length and males are usually smaller. The average male is around 4ft in length.
-Borneo's can reach weights of around 25 pounds.
-In a captive environment a well kept Borneo can live 20 to 25 years.Sometimes even longer.
CAGING AND SUBSTRATE
-You can house your Borneo Short Tailed Pythons in numerous types of Housing.Hatchlings and yearlings can be housed in adequate sized Rubbermaid/Sterlite racks.Adult males & females should be housed in a cage that measures at least 4x2 or 5x2 for male and 5x2 to 6x2 for females.I like to use 5x2 & 6x2 cages for my Borneo's.Cages can be made of wood such as melamine or any commericially made cage will work great.
-Any cage such as a fish tank with screen lid is a poor choice with Borneo's.To much ventilation means low humidity.
-I like to provide my Borneo's with a large water dish that they can soak in and humid hides on the cool and hot sides of the cage.
-For substrate you can use Newspaper, paper towel, coconut husk, coragated cardboard, aspen shavings,Bark or moss.Remember Borneo's love Humidity so use a substrate that well aid is this.Right now i am using a layer of newspaper and ontop of that a layer of Paper towel.I usually mist the cages down from time and when my Borneo's are in a shed cycle i mist them and the cage down daily.I like to keep my Borneo cages at around 55% humidity.A little higher during a shed cycle.
-For heat i use UnderTankHeaters(UTH).I place that on one side of the cage. All my heat is controlled by the Helix DBS-1000.
-Provide your Borneo with a basking spot of 88-90°F and an ambient temperature of 78-80 °F. The ambient temperature should not fall below 75 °F.
-I dont provide any extra form of lighting in my Borneo cages only the room light and the light that comes in from the window.
Here is a cage picture. My females cage is the one in the middle with the blue tubs.

FEEDING
-I like to feed Hatchling and yearling Borneo's every 7 days.I feed a adequate sized rat.Hatchling Borneo's can eat Rat pups or even fuzzies.
-Adults i like to feed every 14 days.
-I like to feed my Borneo's Frozen thawed rats(F/T).Some hatchlings may require a live rodent to get started on feed but they are easily switched over to F/T.
-Feed your Borneo's prey items that are no bigger around than the python at its largest point.
-Some adults may even eat small Rabbits.I recommend feeding a rabbit every 14 days or even every 21.But they will do better on a rat or two every 2nd week.
-Make sure to not overfeed your Borneo as they have a strong feeding response with a very low activity level.
-Give your Borneo 24 to 48 hours before handling after feeding.Only handle them if needed.
-Buy yourself a nice pair of 24" Hemostats and a sturdy snakehook.Makes feeding day much easier and safer for you and your snakes.

CAGE CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
-Clean the cage when required. Each time my Borneo's Deficate or Urinate i clean the full cage and hides.
-If i feed in the cages i clean the cage 24 to 48 hours after feeding.
-Also clean the cage after any water dish spills.
-Make sure you provide your Borneo with clean water.I clean the dishes and change the water every 4th or 5th day. Also some Borneo's like to deficate or urinate in the water dishes so make sure to keep a eye on this.
-There are a number of cleaning products available to clean cages.Bleach mixed properly,Vinagar and water,Dish soap and water. There are also a number of commericially made cleaning products such as "Natural Chemistry's Reptile Relief".Myself i like to use Dish soap & water and Reptile Relief.
GENERAL REPRODUCTIVE INFO(Taken from Nerds caresheet)
-Borneo short-tailed pythons reach sexual maturity anywhere from 18 months to 4 years of age. Breeding size occurs at lengths of 3 - 4'. Breeding season in captivity typically ranges from November to March. Stop all feeding at this time. Animals should be well established and in excellent condition before any breeding is attempted. Breeding may be induced by reducing daytime photoperiod to 8 - 10 hours and dropping nighttime temperatures into the mid 70's. Introduce the male into the female's cage. Misting the animals with water may induce breeding activity. Females typically shed 14-20+ days after ovulation; eggs are typically laid within 30 days of post-ovulation shed. Clutch size for Borneos ranges from 8 - 30 + eggs. At an Incubation temperature of 88 - 90F (optimal), these eggs take an average of 60 days to hatch.
CONCLUSION
-Borneo Short Tailed Pythons should be kept by keepers with experince with other snakes. Some Borneo's are very calm while other can be aggressive.
-They are a very rewarding snake and one of my favorites to work with.
OTHER RELATED SPECIES
-Blood Pythons(Python c. brongersma)
-Sumatran Short Tailed Python a.k.a Black Blood((Python curtus)
-Both of these species can be kept in a simalar fashion although Bloods do tend to get alot bigger then Borneo's and Blacks.Cage size may change a little for a adult Blood.5x2 or 6x2 well work fine.

Even though Bloods,Borneo's & Blacks can be kept in similar fashion i did want to make a little write up on Blood's & Black's.Please refer to the Borneo care sheet for care requirements.

Compared to Borneo's & Black's, Blood Python's are the largest species.
COLOUR VARIATIONS
There naturally exists quite a variation of colors in this species The head can be dark charcoal gray, medium gray, pale chrome gray, a pale flesh color, or reddish tan; the heads of some Sumatran animals are red.The eyes of blood pythons are pale at the top and shaded to dark gray or black at the bottom. Usually the pale postocular stripe is pale gray, the dark postocular blotch is black. The dark pattern elements on most of the body range from rich yellow to medium brown to orange-red to bright red to dark oxblood and, rarely, to very dark gray.
