LIZARD EMERGENCY KIT

Suggestions appreciated....What do you keep in your cupboard to deal with any little emergencies that come up?  capturemymind1@aol.com

Betadine is always a good idea to have around. Also some chlorhexidine-based soap such as scrub-stat to safely clean wounds. Some gauze or cotton swabs wouldn't be a horrible idea, as well as some syringes for tube-feeding and flushing our wounds. Carnivore or herbivore care (depending on the lizard) would be good to have around too.In the case of stubborn lizards who do not want their mouths opened, a device such as a hard piece of cardboard to safely pry open mouths can be a good idea.

I've not had much use for them yet, but I purchased some latex finger cots that can be used to hold a dressing or topical medication in place on a small limb or tail. I used one with some success on a young snake that had managed to give itself a pinch wound. Emphasis on the small though, as you would not want the finger cot constricting the limb or tail.

Polysporin
Paper towels (use as bandages. not sure if there are any bandages for the smaller lizards.)
Heat pad (the portable ones used for back pain)
Cooler

Electrolize ~ or similar product

Hydrogen Peroxide

In general I keep wound aid, turtle eye drops, q-tips, cotton balls, tweezers, scissors, neosporin (to be used only if they cannot lick it off), shed aid, mite off just that type of stuff. Oh btw, if you are in an area with no herp vet around I have found if you know some one in the medical field, they can sometimes help. Now I am not talking about meds and stuff like that, I am talking about a cut or sore type thing.

"For emergency kit I'd keep quick stop for active bleeding, bandages, topical antibiotic and antiseptic - basics of a human kit really.  lrs fluids, liquid calcium supplement, and a smaller box type enclosure for reducing activity in addition to a small pet carrier. I so often see metabolic bone disease from poor diet and care that I've included calcium and small enclosure here (for restriction with fractures)."   ~ provided by a DMV, and lizard keeper.

An extensive list of all contacts is also good to keep in an emergency kit. Similar to what you would do with a babysitter. A list of the closest veterinary clinics complete with driving directions and hours of operation, a list with people on forums like these that you know will have the best advice on hand, etc.

For carniviorous species, a can of premium meat baby/dog/cat food [unhealthy if utilized as a staple of course and fatty but will get the job done temporarily in emergency cases]

For herbivore species, fruit or veggie baby food

Supplementation: calcium dust, nutri-cal, vitacal, and nutristat
Hydration solutions: gatorade or unflavored pedialyte

For breaks/sprains/fractures: various splints of different sizes [ie, toothpick, unused popsicle sticks, etc.]

Extra:
1. Penlight/keychain light
2. Gram scale [good for medication measurements, weighing a light reptile, etc]
3. Stethoscope
4. Sterilized scalpel
5. Sterilized needle of various sizes
6. Disposable gloves
7. Vetrap [gauze that veterinarians utilize]
8. Providone-Iodine Scrub or Betadine [wound disinfectant]
